Depending on your type of hair loss you're experiencing, treatments are available. Your physician may be able to prescribe a different medication, if that medicine is the culprit. Recognizing and treating an infection may also help cease the hair loss. Correcting any hormone imbalances may prevent additional hair loss.
There are certain medications that may help slow or prevent the progression of common baldness. One medicine, minoxidil (also known as Rogaine), is available without a prescription. It is applied to the scalp and both men and women can ultilize it. Another medicine, finasteride (brand name: Propecia) is available by prescription. It comes in pills and is strictly for men. Note that it may take upwards of 6 months before you can tell if one of these medicines is working.
